Description
A survey of American literature and literary history from the early "discovering" and colonizing of America to the mid-nineteenth century. Consideration of many well-known writers (Franklin, Hawthorne, Poe) as well as writings by women, Native Americans, Hispanics and African Americans. Students will acquire a greater comprehension of the historical, philosophical, political, religious and literary forces which shape American life before the Civil War.
