An introduction to a contemporary perspective on the powers and responsibilities of state and local governments in the context of understanding how the government of the United States works. This course will focus on the ways that state and local governments both cooperate and conflict with the national government, and on specific topics including elections; state-local federal relations; and on policy issues, such as education, criminal justice, health and welfare with a particular emphasis on New York City and New York State government and politics.
