Description
This course is intended to introduce students to the arts of Latin America, including Meso, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean. In chronological order, the course will begin by examining the artistic production of the pre-Columbian era, establishing the iconography, styles, traditions, and techniques of each region. The art of colonial Latin America will be explored in regards to the cultural complexity and artistic convergence that characterized Spanish colonialism. Following independence, and in response to the influence of international artists, movements, and ideas, the development of Modern art in Latin America will be discussed. Although emphasis will be placed on the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America, the art of Brazil and Haiti will also be discussed.
